How to Find Your Style In Your 20s!

How to Find Your Style In Your 20s!

The Endless Dilemma...

The 20's hold a lot of life change for a woman. As a 28 year old, my style (Kaitlin, the founder), has changed dramatically in my 20's as I have evolved into the woman I am today! And while I am approaching 30 (ewww still trying not to think about that), I've realized that I have been through MANY stages of style. But one thing has stayed true - I love to dress casual.

Growing up, I was a bit of a tom boy, then I was kind of a girly girl. Then I went to college and wore strictly yoga pants and sweatshirts almost every day. Since then, I've owned my own business and most of my outfits require leggings, joggers, t-shirts, and sweatshirts. I am a pretty simple girl and I have always LOVED a good casual moment. But with having a casual style, I do tend to dress up for nights out, church, events, etc.

But the dilemma is always WHAT DO I WEAR?!

Something I have learned is that while the majority of my wardrobe SCREAMS casual, it is so important to have some statement pieces that I go to that will dress up my outfits. Because who wants to go to their own birthday dinner in jeans and a t-shirt? Not me.

How to find your style

If you're anything like me, you occasionally scroll a boutique website like this one, and your thoughts are, "yikes, that wouldn't fit me right," "I LOVE THAT SO MUCH!!!!,"I wonder if that will look right with the skirt I have," etc.! You're questioning every piece of clothing wondering if it's "you" and there are only a couple that you know for a FACT will look amazing on you.

Here are some things that will help you find your style that will help you navigate online boutiques like the boss girl that you are!

1. Know what is in your closet!!!

Okay, this one might be obvious, but stop buying the same styles over an over! Your style will never change if you only buy button downs, or cropped tanks, or whatever it is that you're stuck on!

2. Know your season of life!

Your season of life may definitely have an impact on your style. Are you a mom? Are you a high school girl? Are you newly married? Do you work in corporate? Our styles often change with seasons and trends. So, where you're at in life may have an impact on what you like to or choose to wear!

3. Let's build a capsule wardrobe!

You may have heard of this before, but if you haven't...get on TikTok and search it! Essentially, a capsule wardrobe is building basic pieces around what you love to wear. This is what is going to define your style. Your capsule wardrobe may be casual, classic, romantic, minimal, heritage, preppy, edgy, boho, or a mix of a couple of these! I have linked Pinterest searches to each one so you can get an idea of what they look like! Spend some time looking through each style. What are you drawn to? Usually people are drawn to 1-3 of the styles.

Once you've picked the ones you gravitate toward, then take a look back at your closet. Which one do you have the most of? That, my friend, is your style. Unless, of course, you want to CHANGE your style to the one you love most. You can certainly be a new you!! Blogs on each individual style are to come, but until then, do some research on the capsule pieces that make up a wardrobe!

4. After you buy the capsule pieces, let's FINALLY build statement pieces!

So you know your style, but you love more than one vibe. Let's talk about how to add in pieces that are bring uniqueness to your closet! First, accessories. Accessories elevate your outfit. For example, you can wear a flowy skirt and t-shirt with sneakers. Super cute right? But a hat can change the vibe. Wanting to give a little edge to your fit? Add a trucker hat. Want to give it a romantic vibe? Add a wide brim hat. Want the outfit to be minimal? Add only stud earrings. Want the outfit to be very boho? Add three or four rings, a couple layered necklaces - one long - and some dangly earrings. Your accessories can REALLY change the style you're going for!

Secondly, find those pieces that are stunning on their own. If you normally are very casual but you want a date night elevated casual outfit, instead of a plain tee, find a synched waisted shirt with dainty florals and a v-neck. Maybe even with bell sleeves. Just having one statement blouse can take your jeans to another level!

Third, shoes are a big indicator of style! Bulky platform shoes give edge to an outfit. Tall boots elongate legs and give some femininity to your dressy outfit, while sneakers give it a casual vibe. Wearing flowy, adding an oversized buttondown can give a flowy, boho vibe, but tucked in can give a minimal vibe.

Fourth, layers make every style elevated. wearing a collared shirt underneath a casual sweatshirt can give a sophisticated vibe to a casual, relaxed style. A patterned, colored jacket can really bring out your personality when most of your outfit is neutral.

5. Just be YOU!

Honestly, this is my best advice. You don't have to have one style if that's not YOU. You don't have to have multiple if you only like one style if that's not YOU. We are all created with individual desires for what we love to wear. Wear what makes you feel GOOD. And please, don't dress like someone else just to be like them or look like them. Dress yourself in what brings out YOUR inner beauty. There is not another YOU on this planet. Express yourself through fashion the way you feel called. Trends are fun and exciting, but there is nothing like feeling yourself in an outfit. You are so unique and made beautiful, friend! We hope you know that!
